The art world is picking up after the pandemic disrupted the art fair calendar last year. This year, two major fairs in Asia will make their debut, ART SG in Singapore and Tokyo Gendai in Yokohama. Here’s a rundown of the most important fairs taking place in 2023.
ART SG, Singapore
ART SG, now part of the Art Assembly portfolio, opened the art fair calendar on January 11th at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre. The fair brought together more than 160 exhibitors, including big names like Gagosian, Pace, White Cube, Lehmann Maupin, and more. Despite few reported sales, dealers remained optimistic about the Asia-Pacific art market.

FOG Design+Art, San Francisco
In its ninth edition, FOG Design+Art brought together 48 leading galleries, including David Zwirner, Lehmann Maupin, and Jessica Silverman. In addition to the booths, there was an immersive installation by Bay Area-based artist Jenny Sharaf and storytelling by artist Joan Brown.

Zona Maco and Material, Mexico City
Zona Maco, one of the most important fairs in Latin America, will bring together over 200 exhibitors from 26 countries, including Hauser & Wirth, Kasmin, and David Lewis. Material, a satellite fair to Zona Maco, will feature exhibitors like Chris Sharp Gallery, Embajada, and Proxyco.

1-54 Marrakech
1-54 Marrakech returns for its first edition since the pandemic, featuring 20 exhibitors from Africa and its diaspora. The fair will showcase eight exhibitors from Africa, including four from Morocco, and 12 first-time exhibitors.

India Art Fair, New Delhi
The India Art Fair is the largest art fair in the subcontinent, featuring 85 exhibitors from India and around the world, including Jhaveri Contemporary, Nature Morte, and Galleria Continua. The fair will also present new commissions by artists in residence and outdoor projects by several artists.

Taipei Dangdai, Taipei
The third edition of Taipei Dangdai, hosted by Art Assembly, will feature around 60 exhibitors. It welcomed over 20,000 visitors in its 2022 edition.

Independent New York and TEFAF
New York Independent and TEFAF New York, previously scheduled to run concurrently with Frieze New York, will now have their runs one week prior to the event. TEFAF will bring together more than 90 exhibitors at the Park Avenue Armory, while Independent New York will feature over 65 exhibitors and nonprofits at Spring Studios. Independent will also debut new partnerships with Phaidon and NYU’s Steinhardt School.

Frieze New York and NADA New York
Frieze New York will return for its third iteration at the Shed, bringing together around 65 exhibitors. NADA New York, organized by the New Art Dealers Association, will take place in Chelsea.

Art Basel, Switzerland
Considered the world’s marquee fair, featuring top blue-chip dealers and almost 300 participants, Art Basel will take place in Switzerland’s third-largest city. This edition will be the first Swiss one helmed by Noah Horowitz as CEO, replacing Marc Spiegler.

Tokyo Gendai, Yokohama
Art Assembly is taking a bold step by launching a new fair, Tokyo Gendai, in early July when many art event attendees typically take a summer break after Art Basel. Held at a convention center in Yokohama, the fair will showcase between 80 and 100 exhibitors under the leadership of Eri Takane. The success of the fair will serve as a measure of the strength of Japan’s art market and how it stacks up against those in other Asian cities such as Seoul, Taipei, Singapore, and Hong Kong, which has been a dominant player in the region for many years.

Frieze Seoul and KIAF
Frieze Seoul is back for its second edition, and will once again coincide with local fair KIAF, with both opening on the same day at different levels of the massive COEX convention center in Seoul. The art world closely watched the inaugural edition of Frieze Seoul last September, as the South Korean art market was on the rise. With the addition of two new competitors in the region, ART SG in Singapore and Tokyo Gendai, the fair’s second year will test its ability to sustain the same level of energy and excitement as in 2022.

Armory Show and Independent 20th Century
The Armory Show is set to return for its third edition at the Javits Center, in a new post-Labor Day slot. Although the exhibitor list is still in the works, the fair saw significant growth in 2022, with over 240 exhibitors, up from 160 the previous year. This growth is expected to continue for the 2023 edition. The fair has enlisted three highly respected curators, Eva Respini, Candice Hopkins, and Adrienne Edwards, to organize its special programming based on historical narratives. Running alongside the Armory Show is the second edition of Independent 20th Century, which focuses on art from the 20th century and aims to revise the canon, featuring more than 30 exhibitors.

Sydney Contemporary
Sydney Contemporary is an annual art fair that was first held in 2013. It is held in Sydney, Australia and is one of the largest art fairs in the Asia-Pacific region. The fair features works from over 90 exhibitors, including galleries from Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, as well as international galleries. The fair showcases contemporary art in various mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installations. The objective of the fair is to provide a platform for galleries and artists to connect with collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts and to promote contemporary art in Australia. The 10th anniversary edition of Sydney Contemporary will take place in 2023, and it is expected to attract thousands of visitors.

Frieze London and Frieze Masters
Frieze London and Frieze Masters are two art fairs that take place annually in London. Frieze London is a contemporary art fair that showcases works from around 160 galleries, representing emerging and established artists. The fair focuses on contemporary art and features a range of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installations.
Frieze Masters, on the other hand, is dedicated to works of art made before 2000 and covers a wide range of historical periods and styles, from ancient civilizations to the 20th century. The fair features galleries specializing in old master paintings, ancient art, and tribal art, among others. The fair provides a platform for galleries and collectors to connect and offers a unique opportunity to see and buy works from across art history.

Paris+, par Art Basel
In 2022, Art Basel staged a surprising takeover of Paris’ Grand Palais dates from the FIAC art fair, resulting in a highly successful and well-received first edition of Paris+ in October. With FIAC now gone, Paris+ is poised to become the city’s main art fair, a significant development due to the increase in art commerce in Paris post-Brexit. While its future success remains uncertain, Paris+ Director Clément Delépine vowed to improve the fair in future editions during a press conference announcing its launch.

The Art Show, New York
The Art Show, an annual event produced by the Art Dealers Association of America, will hold its 35th edition in November. The fair is carefully curated and showcases around 75 exhibitors from the association’s membership. The VIP preview event in the evening will again benefit Henry Street Settlement.

Artissima, Turin
This year, Artissima celebrates its 30th anniversary as one of Italy’s premier art fairs. With approximately 170 exhibitors, it will be the second edition under the leadership of Director Luigi Fassi. Artissima has a reputation for showcasing cutting-edge contemporary art and has been a platform for emerging artists and galleries to gain international exposure.

Art Cologne

Art Basel Miami Beach, Untitled Art, and NADA Miami
In early December, the art world, along with industries like fashion and entertainment, gather in Miami Beach for the annual art fairs. The centerpiece of these events is Art Basel Miami Beach, which is widely considered to be the most important art fair of the year. In 2023, it will take place a week later than usual due to the calendar, and will be the first edition under the leadership of CEO Noah Horowitz, who previously served as the director of Art Basel Americas and was in charge of the Miami Beach event. Alongside Art Basel, two other significant satellite fairs are held: Untitled Art, located on the beach with views of the Atlantic, and NADA Miami, held in Miami proper.
